With the excitement of an Oblivion remake in the air, all my colleagues are celebrating like it’s a New Year’s bash. Yet, those of us who are always chasing the next big thing will be pleased to hear that Todd Howard has reassured us The Elder Scrolls 6 is indeed still on the map. He boldly claimed the team is actively working on it.
Before the deluge of Oblivion Remaster clips and insights, Howard revealed, “obviously we’re working on the 6th chapter here.” It seems like a bit of news gold when you consider how little we’ve heard about The Elder Scrolls 6 since March 2024, which marks the moment Bethesda let slip that early versions of the game were being tested. They even dared to hint that it was—surprisingly—enjoyable.
A reminder of how secretive things have been: a former Skyrim designer dropped a fiery update, predicting no real news on ES6 until we’re six months out from launch. That was way back in October 2023. Just a month prior, Phil Spencer humorously suggested there might be a five-year wait for the game’s release. Now, here we are, almost two years later, still searching for more crumbs of information.
If we’re talking about solid updates from Bethesda, the silence has been deafening. As recently as August 2023, they officially confirmed development had actually begun, five years after they initially announced it at E3. Perhaps it’s a little crazy to suggest, but could it be they jumped the gun on announcing it?
Jokes and sarcasm aside, catching even the smallest glimmer of hope for Elder Scrolls 6 is a welcome surprise. The announcement seems like ancient history; back then, I was a kid in school, and now I’m navigating the ups and downs of adulthood—bills, bad habits, and of course, those dating apps. Bethesda remains at the top of the RPG world, and we know they’ll deliver something great eventually. A piece of concept art would be much appreciated in the meantime; after all, in the film Taken, Liam Neeson had more evidence his daughter was safe than we have for the existence of this game.
