Guide to Using Microsoft Copilot on Windows 11

Alright, here goes nothing. So, Windows 11 has this thing called Copilot, right? It’s like, uh, Microsoft’s attempt to make an AI buddy for your computer, replacing Cortana and everything. Initially, they really tried to weave it directly into the whole system, thinking it would be this all-knowing assistant. You could ask it anything, from what’s tomorrow’s weather to how to tweak system settings. But, uh, apparently, it didn’t quite take off. They kind of ditched that idea for an actual app, ‘cause it needs the cloud to surf the web and spit back answers. So, bye-bye easy desktop panels or quick settings changes straight from the bot. Weird move, if you ask me.

Anyway, this Copilot thing isn’t just trapped in one place. Nope. You’ll bump into it all over—like in Notepad, Photos, Paint, Edge, File Explorer, Office apps—you name it. But, here’s the kicker: What it can do? Totally depends on where you are. It’s like trying to use a Swiss army knife, but some tools only pop out if the vibe is right, you know?

So let’s get real about setting this thing up. On Windows 11, firing up Copilot’s no biggie. You’ve got your entry points to get this chatty friend going. Logging in can be, uh, straightforward—sign in button’s right there. Not there? Hit the “Open Sidebar” button—dunno why they hide it sometimes, but whatever. Once in, it’s chat time.

You can hit it up from the Start menu, just search “Copilot”—it usually shows up on top. Or from Search—but that’s a bit annoying ‘cause it kicks you to a website in Edge. Yeah, thanks for that seamless experience, Microsoft. Oh, and there’s voice commands, too. Just say “Hey, Copilot” if that feature’s turned on. But seriously, who actually uses voice commands with their computer in public? Feels kinda awkward—like talking to yourself, except you blatantly are.

Edge also has its Copilot button chillin’ in the corner, and it’s just like the app if you need a familiar face… or button? I dunno. You can fiddle with some settings, like making it auto-start or changing the AI voice. There’s even a mode for hands-free chat, although I sure hope your microphone’s good. Funny how they assume everyone’s got one built-in.

So, yeah, privacy. If you’re sketched out about Microsoft peeping your data to train their AI, there are toggles for that, too. Just flick ’em off, and you should be golden. Allegedly. Maybe. Who really knows what’s happening behind the curtains, am I right?

Talking to Copilot is pretty chill. You’ve got a message box and, boom, you’re in. Want something simple? Choose “Quick response.” Need it to think a bit harder? Hit “Think Deeper.” Though to be blunt, that can take a hot second. And don’t get me started on its accuracy—it’s hit or miss.

You can also yak into a microphone for voice prompts. Just click the mic button and off you go. Wanted to tell you this obvious fact: you do need a mic for voice chats. Earth-shattering, I know. Anyway, if you’re feeling extra brave, just interrupt it like you would in a real chat. Although, not sure how polite that is to your digital helper.

So there’s this Copilot Vision—a fancy pants feature. You can be in any app, and if you’re lost, ask it for help. Like, copilot the copilot. It’ll highlight sections for you. But, meh, it doesn’t always nail it. Still, kinda wild to see it trying.

And yes, voila, you’ve got Copilot Vision in Edge, too. Imagine sharing your screen and asking it to help you navigate. Brave new world, right? File searching, integrations with inbox apps like Notepad or Paint—just more stuff they threw at the wall.

Managing this beauty? Well, uninstalling stuff is one way, but don’t forget each app is different. Like, shooting off the AI switches in Notepad or your Microsoft 365 apps involves its own quirky set of steps.

In conclusion? It’s a sprawling feature that’s sort of, uh, everywhere and nowhere. It does everything but not all at once. Ironically human that way, maybe? Who knows what’ll come next. Keep ’em guessing, Microsoft.
