Okay, so here’s the deal — Sucker Punch Productions, yeah, they’re back again with some juicy PS5 action. So, the other day they tossed out this sneak peek, right? At Sony’s Yōtei-specific State of Play or whatever it was called. And my future ghost friends out there, pay attention — ’cause Atsu’s got some wild gear, and this trek over Ezo looks like a wild ride. Plus, they’re rolling out these old-but-new presentation modes.
Remember Kurosawa Mode from Ghost of Tsushima? Man, that was a trip. I mean, kudos to Akira Kurosawa — legend in samurai flicks, let’s be real. Seven Samurai, Yojimbo — classics. Anyways, they’re dragging that mode back for Ghost of Yōtei. You get the film grain, black and white, lip-synced Japanese dialogue, all that jazz. Nostalgia central, I suppose.
But here’s something fresh — Takashi Miike Mode. And let me tell ya, it brings the camera right up in the grill of the action, throwing extra blood and muck your way. If you’ve caught 13 Assassins, you’ll vibe with it. And then there’s this collab with Shinichirō Watanabe, the Samurai Champloo guy — cracking out some lo-fi beats for those chill ghostly moments. Battles to lo-fi? Kinda bonkers, but alright.
Anyway, back to the weapons — oh boy, weapons galore. Dual katanas, ōdachi, and those nasty kusarigama things. Atsu is out here flipping between them like she’s cooking up a storm. Plus, she can disarm folks — or get disarmed herself. Exploration’s a biggie too — like in Tsushima, you chase critters to uncover secrets. They say it’s got this Elden Ring vibe for nosing around for surprises. Sounds nifty, right?
Oh, and yeah, they flashed some limited edition ghosty consoles and controllers. Mount Yōtei plastered on those plates and Atsu on the controllers. Gotta love a good themed gadget, even if it’s just more clutter, right?
So, Ghost of Yōtei — not really a sequel. Think more like a distant cousin, 300 years later in Ezo, now Hokkaido. Atsu’s doing her thing, chasing vengeance against the Yōtei Six, the crew who wronged her fam. Racking up that body count — and hey, it’s more freestyle. You can knock off those Yōtei Six in any order. Sort of player’s choice revenge quest, if you catch my drift.
