Oh boy, Sega’s up to something again with Virtua Fighter. Like, just when you thought they’d retired it… bam! News drops. So, this time, we’re getting a Virtua Fighter Direct show. Yep, they picked Sunday, May 11, the last day of Evo Japan, to hit us with it. Catch it on Sega’s Virtua Fighter YouTube place — whenever they actually go live.
Now, they said, “new developments” are coming. But wait — they yanked the whole deal off social media, probably ’cause their YouTube isn’t ready or something? No one seems to know when this Direct thing is even starting. Typical.
Could be Virtua Fighter 6, finally? Or maybe it’s just VF5 on yet another device — maybe my grandma’s old TV? Who knows what they’re cooking. It’s all under wraps for now.
Polygon tried to get a straight answer from Sega. Their rep says, “Yeah, it’s happening Sunday. Stay tuned, we’re posting more soon.” Classic PR speak, right?
We’ll keep this updated once they figure out start times or whatever.
Rewind to 1993. Virtua Fighter pulled a fast one on everyone in the fight game scene. First real 3D fighter to make waves. It made other games like Tekken feel like copycats, and some others like Fight For Life… well, they kinda flopped. Fighter’s Destiny was oddly awesome though!
Last main game they put out? Virtua Fighter 5, back in 2006. Hit the arcades, then consoles — kinda made a career of porting itself everywhere. The latest was REVO, came out on Steam and the fancy consoles. Not on the LG fridge yet, but who knows?
Oh, and last year at the Video Game Awards, they gave a sneak peek of VF6. Characters got some major style changes. Swaggy Akira, anyone?
Anyway, we’re all just here, tapping our fingers, waiting for Sega to come out of their shell with something really solid.
